Photo by @stephenwilkes | While on location in Israel for a «Day to Night» shot of the Western Wall, I was fortunate enough to capture some moments of the people here. These boys were playing a pickup soccer game on a rooftop, sharing a moment of unity in this diverse and historic city. Photo by @coryrichards | Alpinist Adrian Ballinger is pictured at our acclimatization camp, high over the Khumbu Valley’s Island Peak, as we prepare our bodies to climb Everest without the use of supplemental oxygen. Island Peak is also known as Imja Tse, a mountain in Sagarmatha National Park of the Himalayas of eastern Nepal. The peak was named “Island Peak” in 1953 by members of the British Mount Everest expedition, due to its appearance as an island in a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche, a Sherpa village in the Chukhung Valley.

Photo by @coryrichards | A woman turns a prayer wheel, a cylinder on a spindle made from metal and inscribed with the mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum” at Potala Palace, Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region, China. According to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, spinning such a wheel has the same meritorious effect as orally reciting the prayer.

Photo by @coryrichards | Norbu, a Tibetan kitchen worker, stands for a portrait at 21,000 feet, below a fierce wind plume blowing off the summit of Everest. Every year, over a thousand people come to climb Everest. And every year, the climb is made possible by countless seemingly nameless individuals like Norbu. The infrastructure of Himalayan climbing is built, quite literally, on the backs of people like him. Norbu shoulders a bag of freshly chopped glacial ice, which will be melted for water. This is a trip he makes roughly 10 times a day for around six weeks. I will be attempting a new route on Everest this spring, and it’s people like Norbu make climbs like mine possible.

Photo by Juan Arredondo @juanarre | The market district in the San Jude neighborhood of Buenaventura. Illegal armed groups have controlled Buenaventura, Colombia’s second largest port, since 2007. Traveling to Buenaventura was once a very risky prospect. Since the peace process, signed in 2016 by the Colombian government, and with the presence of army troops to stabilize the city, the murder rate has fallen (though violent drug gangs still operate) and the city is making a move to attract tourists. Buenaventura is now a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, based on its gastronomy. Photo by Cory Richards @coryrichards | It has taken me over a month to get from the United States to Mount Everest’s Advanced Base Camp (aka ABC) located at 21,000 feet/6,400m. After the past two days of acclimatizing at ABC, we set out to explore the bottom section of a new route that my partner @estebantopomena and I are attempting to ascend. Pictured here, Topo starts the approach to our proposed new route. #followme @coryrichards for previously unseen footage shot #onassignment for #natgeo and the culture #travel adventure of the Himalayas including this climb on the northeast face of #everest where we will attempt a new route without the use of supplemental oxygen or porter support in alpine style.
