Photo by Anastasia Taylor-Lind @anastasiatl | Ioana Timon (74), a mother of 10, is a recipient of the communist “Mama Eroina” medal of maternity, which was given to women with large families during Ceausescu’s era. Ceausescu banned contraception and abortion, forcing birthrates to be unnaturally high until they dropped dramatically and immediately after his death and the collapse of communism in 1989. Valea Grecului village, Moldova region, Romania. 2013. From an as-yet unpublished project, «Negative Zero: Europe’s Declining Populations.»

If contraception and abortion were banned then wouldn’t birthrates actuate be MORE natural? Considering abortion and contraception are man made and unnatural….

I can’t tell if this story is negative or positive. Are you vilifying this woman, or praising her. People think that the ultimate sacrifice is going to war, well it isn’t. The ultimate sacrifice is to choose to give your life for another. I am not pro or against, let me make that clear. We should honor mothers every where. A woman who makes up her own mind to have children and raise them to the best of her ability (and not even her husbands can compare) doesn’t necessarily need to be rewarded. If her kids are alive and well, and maybe there are grandchildren and great grandchildren. Stop the negativity against women in all forms even if you think you are being sympathetic. Did you know that in the US alone childbirth is in the top 5 killers of women. But many women joyfully go into this situation and we all win, because we all had a mother who birthed us and hopefully loved us.
